Great Falls has a heritage rich in American history. The city of some 9,000 residents takes its name from the Great Falls of the Potomac, the largest in a series of treacherous, rocky falls that mark a fault line along the river and drops 75 feet over a two mile distance. The main road through Great Falls is Georgetown Pike, which was once a buffalo trail that winded along the Potomac River over 300 years ago.
